Population and Housing Characteristics from the 2000 Census

Nevada Counties and Places with Race and Ethnicity. This table is an initial listing of Nevada's Counties and Places. The race and ethnicity columns will exceed the total population if added together. This is because race and ethnicity are different concepts and ethnicity can span over racial categories. We will be posting more detailed tables later on.

A Guide to Using American FactFinder at the Census Bureau's Website. American FactFinder is referred to below for finding information, and this guide introduces how to use it.

Census Tract Maps – The Census Bureau has made Census Tract maps available for downloading at this link. The maps are basic tract maps and are in Adobe Acrobat. Clicking on the link will take you to the site with maps for all 50 states. More detailed maps for Nevada are available for purchase from the GIS Division of the NSBDC. Please call (775) 784-1771 for more information on purchasing.

The following two links will take you to currently released Census Data:

Census 2000 Redistricting (Public Law 94_171) Summary File will lead you to American FactFinder tables for Nevada. It is a good link if you are needing information about Nevada's Cities and Towns. Be sure to click on the Geography tab under the selection menu.

Census 2000 Data for the State of Nevada presents a set of summary tables for the State detailing Racial and Ethnic information to the County and City level. The formats are Adobe Acrobat and Excel tables.

The Census is the most comprehensive source for information on our population and its characteristics such as age, income, occupation, as well as housing information. Locations to view Census Data in either electronic format (cd's), paper, or through the internet include:

  • Your local library
  • The various community college and university libraries across the state

Data from the 2000 Census will become available over the course of 2001 and 2002. The schedule for the data releases is available at the US Bureau of the Census and can be viewed by clicking here. Clicking on First Census 2000 Results – Resident Population and Apportionment Counts will take you to the first data product which is information on reapportionment, total population of the states and other related information. The Census Bureau will presenting information on the internet and the primary site to view it at will be the American FactFinder site. We strongly suggest that you take an opportunity to visit this if you are looking for Census data.

The State Demographer's Office will be producing a set of publications from the Nevada data. This information will be to at least the county level and produced on a flow basis as the data becomes available. Please fill out our mailing list form if you wish to be notified about these publications or other news about our office. This form may also be used to submit data requests as well. Because of limited resources custom data requests are conducted on a discretionary basis with priority given to state and local governments and non profit agencies.

On a fee for service basis, NSBDC's Geographic Information Services Department can visually display Census data or report data at specific geographies such as a market area study. To request this service, please call (775) 784-1771 or email bonnen@unr.edu.
